INFORMATION
Using social media websites is among the most common activity of today’s children and adolescents. Such sites offer today’s youth a portal of information, entertainment and communication and have grown in recent years. For this reason it is important that parents become aware of social media sites, given that not all of them are a healthy environment for children and adolescents. Excessive use of social media will have a damaging impact on young people’s learning, mental health and wellbeing.
The workshop aims:
- To provide parents and young people an opportunity to discuss and debate the benefits of social media and the impacts of excessive and addictive use.
- To enable parents to understand social media sites and to encourage healthy use by children.
- To encourage and support families to monitor for potential problems including cyber bullying, online gambling, sexting, exposure to inappropriate contents, etc.

Online Black History Resources
The British Museum in collaboration with The CarAf Centre have launched an on-line Black history resource. The resources are primarily aimed at the Key Stage 3 module on the development of trade, colonisation, industrialisation and technology, especially the defined sections on African Civilisations, the Slave Trade, and the British Empire. However they can also be used to teach different Key Stages and age groups, and a broader range of topics, including Diversity and Black History.
The resource consists of:
- Teachers Notes: providing background information as well as reading lists and a specimen lesson plan.
- Student Work Sheets: which can be used as part of normal teaching or as homework.
- Presentations: which give an introduction and an overview to the section, which is suitable for whole class teaching.
